COURSE SUMMARY
A recent update in periodontal terminology includes a shift from the term “biotype”, replacing it with the term “phenotype”. In addition, there is growing interest and acceptance in developing the dentoalveolar bone complex to expand the orthodontic boundary conditions in perio-ortho therapies. This course is geared towards learning the technique of phenotype modification therapy via corticotomy surgery, dentoalveolar decortication, and bone morphotype augmentation. “The Technique Course” will be a 2-day surgical mentorship program geared towards mastering corticotomy-assisted orthodontic therapy and phenotype modification surgery.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
- To review key diagnostic findings critical to treatment planning the interdisciplinary patient
- To appreciate dentoalveolar bone phenotypes and the advantage of SFOT
- To present the biology, risks/benefits, and execution of SFOT in advanced interdisciplinary therapy
- Learn how to treatment plan the IDT patient using the concepts of structure, function, and behavior to drive treatment decisions
- Congenitally Missing Maxillary Lateral Incisors
- To master the surgical nuances and complexities of phenotype modification surgery (SFOT)

- Welcome and Introduction of Attendees/Guests
- Structure, Function, Behavior. A new treatment planning mindset for interdisciplinary patient care
- Diagnosis and dentofacial analysis. CBCT based analysis
- Developmental anatomy and the human problem requiring phenotype modification
- Introduction of Explora USA case planning with SFOT surgery and aligners with Dr. Ellen Crean
- The biology of corticotomy surgery plus the how, where, with, and what to augment the phenotype for sustainable results.
- The role of SFOT in decompensating the skeletal malocclusion requiring orthognathic surgery (or not), including total joint replacement. Case examples.
- Medical Optimization of the patient undergoing SFOT. Patient Selection. Guest presenters: Dr. Michael Feurstein and Dr. Slaton Hoffner (Wisconsin AmbulatoryAnesthesia)
***Friday evening, 6-9pm join us for Dinner & Discussion*** featuring guest presenter Dr. Ilya Lipkin (orthodontist); (Westwood, New Jersey) Dr. Lipkin will be discussing the planning and designing of non-surgical skeletal expansion (MARPE) as well as the pre & post SFOT orthodontic management of cases.

About the Speaker
George Mandelaris DDS, MS, FICD, FACD
Dr. Mandelaris attended the University of Michigan from undergraduate through dental school. He completed a post-graduate residency program at the University of Louisville, School of Dentistry, where he obtained a certificate in the speciality of Periodontology as well as a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Oral Biology. Dr. Mandelaris is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and is a Fellow in the American and International College of Dentists, the Academy of Osseointegration, as well as the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Dr. Mandelaris serves as an ad-hoc reviewer for the Journal of Periodontology and the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants. In 2021, he was appointed as an Editorial Consultant to the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry. He has published over 40 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and has authored fourteen chapters in ten different textbooks used worldwide on subjects related to computer guided implantology, CT/CBCT diagnostics and surgically facilitated orthodontic therapy (SFOT). In 2023, he authored and edited the book: Surgically Facilitated Orthodontic Therapy: An Interdisciplinary Approach (Springer)- one of the first textbooks of its kind in the profession. Dr Mandelaris is a two-time recipient of the American Academy of Periodontology’s (AAP) Clinical Research Award (2017 & 2021), an award given to the most outstanding scientific article with direct clinical relevance in Periodontics. A nationally recognized expert, he was appointed by AAP to cochair the 2017 Best Evidence Consensus Workshop on the use of CBCT Imaging in Periodontics as well as co-author the academy’s guidelines. In 2018, he was recognized with American Academy of Periodontology’s Special Citation Award. Dr. Mandelaris is the 2018 recipient of The Saul Schluger Memorial Award for Clinical Excellence in Diagnosis and Treatment Planning. Dr. Mandelaris currently serves on the American Academy of Periodontology Board of Trustees and has served as a Past President of the Illinois Society of Periodontists. He is a key-opinion leader for several industry leaders and holds memberships in many professional organizations. Dr. Mandelaris is in private practice at Periodontal Medicine & Surgical Specialists in Glenview and Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. He limits his practice to Periodontology, Dental Implant Surgery, Bone Reconstruction and Tissue Engineering Surgery.
